Neither side of this decision has a direct regret survey, so both numbers below are clearly-labelled proxies. On the heritage-assertion side, the proxy is the cost that visibly heritage-distinct people bear: a 2023 Pew Research Center survey of 7,006 Asian American adults found that 58% say they have ever experienced racial discrimination or been treated unfairly because of their race or ethnicity. That cost sits alongside, not instead of, a benefit: a meta-analysis of 83 studies and 23,197 participants (Nguyen & Benet-Martinez, Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, 2013) found that maintaining heritage identity in its bicultural form is positively associated with both psychological and sociocultural adjustment, more so than leaning on either culture alone.
On the assimilation side, the proxy is measured heritage-identity attrition rather than self-reported regret. A 2017 Pew analysis tracked Hispanic self-identification across immigrant generations: it falls from 97% among immigrants to 92% in the second generation, 77% in the third, and 50% by the fourth-or-higher generation — a roughly even split that has stopped identifying with the heritage at all. A systematic review of 21 acculturation studies (61,885 migrants; Public Health in Practice, 2020) corroborates the direction of the cost: integration, which keeps heritage identity alongside the host culture, has a more significant positive effect on mental health than assimilation, which adopts the host culture while rejecting one’s own.
So measured as discrimination cost (58%) versus heritage-loss attrition (50%), the two proxies land close together, with the visible, immediate cost of heritage assertion edging slightly higher. That ordering should be read with heavy caveats: the figures come from different ethnic populations, different surveys, and genuinely different constructs, so this is not a bilateral within-population regret comparison. The optimal strategy is also highly context-dependent — heritage assertion in a multicultural policy environment like Canada or Australia carries different costs than the same assertion in a monocultural assimilationist context.

The 58% is a cost-of-distinctiveness proxy: people who remain visibly heritage-distinct in a host society bear a measurable discrimination cost. It is NOT a direct regret survey -- no study asks heritage-assertive immigrants "do you regret it?" at scale. regret_rate = 0.58.

Meta-analysis of 83 studies (322 correlations, 23,197 participants) found a significant, strong, positive association between biculturalism -- maintaining heritage identity alongside host-culture adoption -- and both psychological and sociocultural adjustment

Authoritative anchor for the heritage-assertion side. Establishes that maintaining heritage identity (in its bicultural form) is positively associated with adjustment, so the discrimination cost above is a cost borne alongside, not instead of, well-being benefits. Does not itself report a regret percentage. DOI verified live (302 -> journals.sagepub.com).

Replaces the original ICMC essay statistic. The ICMC article was verified to be a conceptual essay containing zero percentages or survey figures -- the prior "~38% heritage-loss regret" was not stated in it and was fabricated. This Pew analysis quantifies the actual heritage-loss process: by the fourth-or-higher generation, only 50% of US adults with Hispanic ancestry still self-identify as Hispanic. This is a heritage-identity attrition proxy, not a direct regret survey. regret_rate = 0.50.

Systematic review on acculturation strategies and mental health (Public Health in Practice, PMC9461568, 21 studies, 61,885 migrants). Replaces the original PMC4590001 citation which returned HTTP 410 Gone. This systematic review provides empirical grounding for why assimilation carries an inaction cost: integration (keeping heritage identity alongside the host culture) consistently outperforms assimilation in mental-health outcomes. It does NOT report a regret percentage -- it qualifies the direction of the heritage-loss proxy, which is quantified by the Pew attrition figure above.
Застереження
Neither rate is a direct regret survey -- no study at scale asks "do you regret asserting / suppressing your heritage identity?" with matched comparison groups, so both sides use clearly-labelled proxies and the proxy_only flag is warranted. The action-side 58% is a cost-of- distinctiveness proxy: the share of Asian American adults who report ever experiencing racial discrimination (Pew, 2023). It captures the cost visibly heritage-distinct people bear, not regret -- and the same literature (Nguyen & Benet-Martinez, 2013) shows maintaining heritage identity is positively associated with adjustment overall, so this is a cost borne alongside, not instead of, benefits. The inaction-side 50% is a heritage-loss attrition proxy: the share of US adults with Hispanic ancestry who still self-identify as Hispanic falls to 50% by the fourth-or-higher generation (Pew, 2017) -- a measured loss of heritage identity as families assimilate, again not direct regret. The two figures come from different ethnic populations, different surveys, and different constructs, so this is not a bilateral within-population comparison. Context dominates: integration is more viable in multicultural policy environments (Canada, Australia) than in monocultural assimilationist ones (France, Japan), and the cost of heritage assertion depends on how visible the heritage is in the specific host context. Berry's framework (corroborated by the PMC systematic review) holds that integration dominates assimilation in long-term well-being.
