The Gap Year Association’s 2015 National Alumni Survey (roughly 550 alumni completing the full questionnaire) reported a strongly positive mean overall impact score of 4.06 on a 1-to-5 scale, with “Personal” development the top-rated impact category. The survey does not publish a direct gap-year-regret figure; against that positive skew we set the action-regret rate at a deliberately conservative ~10% — an upward-adjusted rough estimate, not a number the report states. The action-side figure should be read as a lower-bound estimate: this is an advocacy-organisation sample that over-represents alumni of well-funded, structured programmes, alumni who never returned to education are absent from it, and the programme cost barrier screens out economically disadvantaged students for whom the risk calculus differs.

The inaction side shows a consistently higher regret signal. A USA TODAY Blueprint Loans survey from October 2024, polling 1,000 US degree-holders (reported by Inside Higher Ed), found that 31% of college graduates wish they had taken a gap year before entering higher education, rising to 47% among Gen Z grads — those closest in time to the decision. This is the headline inaction-regret figure used here. As corroborating context, the UK HEPI/Advance HE Student Academic Experience Survey 2024 found that about 42% of current undergraduates would change their course or institution choice (58% would make no change). That is a related but distinct construct — buyer’s remorse about which course or university, not regret about skipping a gap year — so it is cited as supporting context rather than blended into the headline rate.

The psychological mechanism follows Gilovich’s temporal asymmetry: acting (going straight to university) generates regrets that are concrete but narrow — wrong course, wrong institution, insufficient preparation — while not acting generates regrets that are diffuse and counterfactual. Both types of regret are present, but inaction regret tends to persist and accumulate rather than fade with rationalization. The main confound is selection: students who are motivated enough to structure a meaningful gap year are also more likely to arrive at university with clearer goals, making it difficult to separate the causal effect of the gap year from the pre-existing traits that lead someone to choose one.

Gap Year Association 2015 National Alumni Survey (1,002 clicked the link, 863 eligible, 558 completed the full survey; per-question n varies). The report does not publish a direct gap-year-regret rate. Alumni self-report a strongly positive mean overall impact score (4.06 on a 1-5 scale), with "Personal" development the top-rated category. Read against that positive skew, we set the action-regret rate at a conservative ~10% -- a deliberately upward-adjusted rough estimate, NOT a figure stated by the source, because this advocacy-organisation sample over-represents alumni of well-funded, structured programmes and excludes those who never returned to education at all. Treat 0.10 as an indicative upper-of-optimistic estimate rather than a measured regret rate.

This is a direct measure of the inaction-side construct: 31% of degree-holders wish they had taken a gap year before enrolling, rising to 47% among Gen Z grads. We adopt the all-graduates headline of 31% as the inaction-regret rate. (The previously-cited Gallup 2017 poll 211529 measured a different construct -- which education decision adults would change: 36% field of study, 28% institution, 12% degree type -- and did not contain the gap-year figures; it has been replaced.)

HEPI/Advance HE Student Academic Experience Survey 2024, a large annual survey of current UK undergraduates. This is the authoritative source on the entry; it measures a RELATED BUT DIFFERENT construct -- course/institution buyer's remorse (~42% would change course or institution) -- not regret about going straight to university instead of taking a gap year. It is retained only as corroborating context that pre-enrolment choices are a major source of student regret; the headline inaction-regret rate comes from the USA TODAY Blueprint gap-year figure (31%), not from this course-choice number.

Застереження

The action-side data comes primarily from the Gap Year Association, an advocacy organisation whose alumni surveys over-represent participants in structured, well-funded programmes. Unstructured or unproductive gap years -- and those who never returned to education at all -- are absent from the sample, which likely understates the true action-regret rate. Gap years are heavily wealth-stratified: access to productive overseas or structured programmes is not evenly distributed across socioeconomic groups, and the costs of a gap year can extend total debt for lower-income students. The inaction-side 31% is the direct gap-year-regret figure from the USA TODAY Blueprint (Oct 2024) survey of degree-holders; it rises to 47% among Gen Z grads. The HEPI/Advance HE figure (~42% would change course or institution) measures a related but distinct construct -- course-and- institution buyer's remorse, not regret about skipping a gap year -- and is cited only as corroborating context, not as the headline rate. The USA TODAY Blueprint survey is a commercial poll (1,000 degree-holders), so the 31% should be read as indicative rather than a gold-standard estimate. The decision context differs substantially across educational systems: UK gap years carry institutional support and are culturally normalised; US gap years remain unusual and lack a comparable deferral infrastructure. The inaction-dominates pattern is consistent with Gilovich's long-run temporal asymmetry -- regret about paths not taken tends to grow, while regret about experiences lived tends to fade.
