There is no direct survey asking Indian stayers and emigrants the same regret question, so both sides here are proxies drawn from the Carnegie Endowment’s 2026 Indian American Attitudes Survey (N=1,000, conducted with YouGov). For the inaction side, the closest available signal is a revealed preference: asked to advise “Rishi,” a hypothetical professional weighing a US work visa against staying in India, 62% recommended applying for the US visa while only 23% advised staying. That endorsement of leaving, against the backdrop of India’s large per-capita income gap with OECD economies (Economic Survey of India 2023), proxies the perceived opportunity cost of staying — though it is not the same as stayers reporting regret themselves.

On the action side, life abroad carries concrete costs: in the same Carnegie survey, about one in two (50%) Indian Americans reported experiencing discrimination over the prior year, and 14% said they had frequently thought about leaving the US (26% occasionally). The broader diaspora also shows ambivalence — a Heidrick & Struggles / Economic Times study found roughly 82% of Non-Resident Indians would consider returning to India if suitable opportunities arose. None of these is a direct emigration-regret measure, but together they point to substantial unresolved tension with the emigration outcome.

The 12-point gap between these two proxies (inaction 62%, action 50%) should be read cautiously: the two figures measure different constructs — one an advice-to-leave revealed preference, the other a discrimination-experience rate — and are not strictly commensurable. India-specific factors still shape the picture: the NRI identity carries significant social status within Indian culture; destination-country variation is larger for Indian emigrants than for, say, British ones; and the decision is often constrained by family debt, professional networks, and visa rules in ways that blur the line between voluntary choice and structural necessity. The proxy_only flag reflects the absence of a controlled bilateral survey asking the same regret question to emigrants and stayers in the same cohort.

The 2026 Indian American Attitudes Survey (IAAS) is a nationally representative online survey of 1,000 Indian American adults conducted between 25 Nov 2025 and 6 Jan 2026 in partnership with YouGov (margin of error +/-3.6%). The "one in two reported discrimination" finding is used as a hardship-abroad PROXY for the action side, not a direct regret measure: it captures a concrete adverse experience of life abroad. regret_rate = 0.50 (= "one in two"). This is a US-specific proxy and may not represent Indian emigrants in the UK, Gulf, or Australia.

The 82% return-willingness figure comes from a joint survey by the recruitment advisory firm Heidrick & Struggles and The Economic Times (c. 2011), reported by The National on 2011-07-10 — NOT NITI Aayog (the prior citation misattributed the source and pointed to the bare niti.gov.in homepage, which does not host the survey). The figure is a revealed-preference proxy: it does not measure regret directly but indicates that a large share of NRIs maintain a conditional desire to reverse the emigration decision. Used as corroborating context (~2011 vintage) rather than the primary regret_rate source.

The Economic Survey provides the macro backdrop (the India-vs-OECD per-capita income gap) that motivates the revealed preference for emigration. It documents the income differential, NOT a regret rate; the inaction-side regret_rate is anchored to the Carnegie 2026 IAAS revealed-preference figure, not to this income-gap data. Used as corroborating macro context only.

Lưu ý

Neither rate is a direct regret measure — both are proxies drawn from the Carnegie 2026 Indian American Attitudes Survey (N=1,000, YouGov). The action-side 50% is the share of Indian Americans who reported experiencing discrimination abroad in the prior year (a concrete adverse experience of life abroad, not a regret question), and is US-specific — emigrants in the UK, Gulf, or Australia face different conditions. The inaction-side 62% is a revealed-preference proxy: the share who, advising a hypothetical professional, recommend pursuing US work over staying in India; it measures endorsement of leaving, not stayers' self-reported regret. The two sides therefore measure different constructs and are not strictly commensurable. The "NRI" identity carries strong positive status connotations in Indian culture, which may shape both reported discrimination and advice-to-leave. India's reverse brain drain, accelerating since 2020, means younger cohorts face a different cost-benefit calculus than earlier emigrants. The proxy_only flag reflects the absence of a bilateral regret survey asking both emigrants and stayers the same regret question with the same instrument.
