A 2023 ClearMatch Medicare/OnePoll survey of 2,000 Americans aged 65+ found that roughly two-thirds (~67%) regret not taking their health more seriously when younger. Exercise is the #1 ignored doctor’s advice in the same survey (21%), ahead of nutrition (16%), scheduled appointments (13%), and medications (12%) — the single largest named lapse within that broader regret figure, though the survey does not report a regret rate isolated to exercise alone. On the action side, no published survey directly asks regular exercisers “do you regret exercising?” — the question barely arises because exercise-action regret is treated as near-zero in the literature. The best available proxy comes from Rhodes and Mistry (2016), who found that 95% of university students anticipated they would regret missing physical activity, leaving roughly 5% indifferent — though this measures anticipated regret about inactivity, not retrospective regret about having exercised. Roese and Summerville’s meta-analysis of regret-ranking studies confirms the broader temporal pattern: regrets of inaction persist longer than regrets of action, because they remain psychologically open.

The pattern maps cleanly onto Gilovich and Medvec’s temporal model: in the short term, the hassle of getting to the gym dominates; in the long term, the failure to have maintained a habit dominates. Retirees do not lie awake wishing they had skipped fewer workouts. They lie awake wishing they had shown up.

The main limitation is measurement asymmetry. The action-side 5% is an anticipated-regret proxy from a small convenience sample (n=120 Canadian undergraduates), while the inaction-side 67% comes from retrospective surveys of US retirees and measures general health regret rather than a rate isolated to exercise specifically. These populations differ in age, country, and framing, and the 67% should be read as a general-health proxy for exercise-related regret — not a directly surveyed exercise-only rate. Still, the directional finding — that sedentary regret dwarfs exercise regret — is consistent across every survey in the literature and is unlikely to reverse under any reasonable reweighting.

Rhodes & Mistry (2016) primed 120 Canadian university students on the public health definition of physical activity and measured ANTICIPATED regret for missing exercise. 95% anticipated regretting inactivity. We invert this: 5% expressed indifference toward missing exercise. IMPORTANT: this is anticipated regret about NOT exercising, not retrospective regret about HAVING exercised. It is an anticipated-regret proxy from a small convenience sample (n=120, undergraduates). No published survey directly measures the share of regular exercisers who regret exercising; the literature uniformly treats exercise-action regret as near-zero, but without a direct measurement.

Roese & Summerville (2005) meta-analysis of 11 regret-ranking studies of American adults. Health is NOT a top-six regret domain in this paper (education 32.2%, career 22.3%, romance 14.8%, parenting 10.2%, self 5.5%, leisure 2.5%; health ranks lower). The relevant finding for this entry is the general action/inaction asymmetry: regrets of inaction persist longer than regrets of action because they remain "psychologically open." This supports the directional inaction-dominates pattern (regretting not having exercised outlasts regretting having exercised) but does not report any exercise-specific percentage.

    Perhitungan
ClearMatch Medicare commissioned OnePoll to survey 2,000 Americans aged 65+ (August–September 2023). The survey reported "approximately two-thirds" (67%) regret not taking health seriously -- used directly as regret_rate. Exercise is the #1 ignored doctor advice at 21%, ahead of nutrition (16%), scheduled appointments (13%), and medications (12%), confirming exercise is the single largest named lapse within the 67% figure, but the survey does not report a regret rate isolated to exercise alone. A prior version of this entry derived an "exercise-only" estimate via 67% × (21/(21+16+other)) ≈ 52%, which is mathematically impossible: with other ≥ 0, that formula's own maximum (at other=0) is 21/37 × 67% ≈ 38%, well below 52%, and the now-confirmed additional ignored-advice categories (appointments 13%, medications 12%) push the true ceiling of that approach lower still (21/62 × 67% ≈ 23%). Since no published breakdown isolates exercise-specific regret, this entry now reports the directly-surveyed 67% general health-regret figure instead of a fabricated derivative.

This URL was previously cited here for a MedicareFAQ retirement- regrets survey (1-in-4 retirees regret retiring; health listed as a top regret category). Re-fetching the live page found different content: it is now titled "Retirement Regrets of Seniors: What You Can Learn from Their Mistakes" (byline dated 2026-04-08) and covers Medicare enrollment/coverage-gap planning mistakes -- over 60% of retirees affected -- with no health-regret or exercise-regret survey data. The prior claim that this source "corroborates health as a top regret category" does not match the page's current content and has been removed accordingly. This source is retained only as general retirement-mistake context; it does NOT corroborate and is not used in deriving the 67% regret_rate, which rests solely on the ClearMatch Medicare/OnePoll survey above.

Catatan

Populasi sampel berbeda secara substansial (sarjana Kanada vs pensiunan AS).
