Stima approssimativa: Non esiste alcuna indagine.

Lo US Census/Forum on Child and Family Statistics pone la popolazione 0-5 del 2023-2024 a circa 22,1-22,6 milioni; usando 22,4 milioni, 566 / 22.400.000 = 2,5e-5, ovvero circa 1 su 40.000.
1 su 40.000
566 confirmed/probable/suspect cases reported to CDC against ~22.4 million US children aged 0-5. This is the headline. Most of these children were never exposed; the figure is the population-wide reported-case share during the one outbreak, not a per-exposure risk.
1 su 172.414
Restricting to the 130 laboratory-confirmed cases (blood lead level at or above 3.5 ug/dL with a confirmatory venous draw) against 22.4 million children: 130 / 22,400,000 = 5.8e-6, about 1 in 172,000. The full headline includes probable and suspect cases that met the exposure-plus-screening definition without a confirmatory venous level.
1 su 45 · 2,2%
Context, not part of the outbreak. CDC estimates roughly 500,000 US children aged 1-5 carry a blood lead level at or above the 3.5 ug/dL reference value at any given time, against a 1-5 population near 22 million, an ongoing prevalence on the order of 2%. The dominant lifetime lead-exposure pathways for US children remain deteriorating paint and plumbing, not adulterated spice; the cinnamon outbreak is a distinct, episodic mechanism layered on top of that baseline.

In the winter of 2023 a counted thing happened that is hard to assign a probability to. Between late October 2023 and April 2024, CDC logged 566 cases of lead poisoning across 44 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, tied to cinnamon-flavored apple puree pouches sold under the WanaBana, Schnucks, and Weis labels. Of those, 542 — about 96 percent — were children under six, and 311 were under two. The median peak venous blood lead level among reported cases was 7.2 micrograms per deciliter, roughly double CDC’s 3.5 reference value, with individual children reaching 39.3. Against the roughly 22.4 million US children under six alive during that window, 566 reported cases works out to about 1 in 40,000, and the 130 laboratory-confirmed cases alone to about 1 in 172,000. Both numbers describe a single historical outbreak, not a recurring per-year rate, which is why this entry is scoped to that one event rather than to a lifetime.
The reason a lifetime figure would be dishonest is the mechanism. FDA testing of the cinnamon that Ecuadorian supplier Negasmart sold to the manufacturer Austrofoods returned lead concentrations of 2,270 and 5,110 parts per million — against an international draft standard of 2.5 ppm for lead in bark spices. The recalled finished puree tested at 2.18 ppm, more than 200 times the 0.01 ppm action level FDA has proposed for baby and toddler food. The lead arrived as lead chromate, a bright pigment historically added to spices to inflate their weight and deepen their color, and FDA’s stated leading hypothesis is that this was an act of economically motivated adulteration. That is a supply-chain fraud event, episodic and discrete. It has no stable annual denominator the way drowning or car crashes do, so the number above is a measurement of what already occurred, not a forecast of what a given pouch carries today.
The headline also flatters the denominator in a way worth stating plainly. It divides the cases by every US child under six, almost none of whom ever ate the product. The conditional risk for a child who actually consumed a recalled lot was far higher — CDC built its case definition around recent consumption precisely because exposure was the near-necessary condition for an elevated level. The episode is best read as one realized instance of a recurring vulnerability rather than a settled rate: through 2024 and into 2025 FDA continued to expand a separate public-health alert naming additional ground-cinnamon products, with reported lead levels of roughly 2 to nearly 11 ppm, and the agency notes there is no safe blood lead level in children. The dominant lifetime lead pathway for US children is still deteriorating paint and plumbing, with roughly half a million children carrying an elevated level at any time from those ambient sources. Adulterated spice is a distinct, episodic hazard layered on top, and its long-term effects on the children counted in this outbreak, CDC writes, remain unknown.

Investigation of Lead and Chromium Exposure After Consumption of Contaminated Cinnamon-Containing Applesauce — United States, November 2023–April 2024- Statistica
566 total cases (130 confirmed, 401 probable, 35 suspected) across 44 states, DC, and Puerto Rico; 542 (96%) in children under 6, 311 (55%) under 2; median within-person maximum venous BLL 7.2 ug/dL (range 3.5-39.3); presence of lead chromate indicative of economic adulteration; no safe BLL in children; long-term implications unknown- Estratto
“During November 22, 2023–April 12, 2024, a total of 44 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico reported 566 cases. Overall, 130 (23%) confirmed, 401 (71%) probable, and 35 (6%) suspected cases were reported. Children aged <6 years accounted for 542 (96%) cases, 311 (55%) of which were in children aged <2 years. The median within-person maximum venous BLL was 7.2 μg/dL (range = 3.5–39.3 μg/dL). [...] the presence of this compound is indicative of economic adulteration [...] there is no safe BLL in children [...] The long-term implications of this event remain unknown.”

- Primary denominator source for the headline. The 566 case count and the 96%-under-6 / 55%-under-2 age split anchor both the native numerator and the age multiplier. 566 / 22.4M under-6 = 2.5e-5 (headline); 130 confirmed / 22.4M = 5.8e-6 (confirmed-only regional row). The median 7.2 ug/dL venous BLL (roughly double the 3.5 ug/dL reference value, top of range 39.3) anchors the serious_harm severity and chronic_illness outcome type, given lead's documented irreversible neurodevelopmental effects. The 'no safe BLL' and 'long-term implications unknown' statements anchor the caveats.

[2] US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) — Investigation of Elevated Lead & Chromium Levels: Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches (November 2023)
Investigation of Elevated Lead & Chromium Levels: Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches (November 2023)- Statistica
Cinnamon supplied by Negasmart to Austrofoods contained 5,110 ppm and 2,270 ppm lead; recalled WanaBana puree sampled at 2.18 ppm (>200x the 0.01 ppm proposed action level); lead chromate present; FDA's leading hypothesis is economically motivated adulteration; 69 adverse-event complaints to FDA as of Dec 19, 2023; Codex considering a 2.5 ppm maximum for lead in bark spices- Estratto
“These samples have undergone analysis and results show extremely high levels of lead contamination, 5110 parts per million (ppm) and 2270 ppm. [...] Historically, lead chromate has been illegally added to certain spices to increase their weight and enhance their color, which increases the monetary value of the adulterated spices. FDA's leading hypothesis remains that this was likely an act of economically motivated adulteration.”

- Authoritative source for the mechanism (economically motivated adulteration of imported cinnamon with lead chromate) and the magnitude of contamination (2,270-5,110 ppm raw cinnamon; 2.18 ppm in finished puree, >200x the proposed 0.01 ppm action level). These figures support the framing that the hazard is an episodic supply-chain adulteration event rather than an ambient base rate, and underpin the 'actually consumed a recalled pouch' multiplier. FDA's 69-complaint count is a distinct pipeline from CDC's 566 and the agencies caution the two should not be added.

- FDA's investigation (product sampling, facility inspection in Ecuador, adverse-event complaints) is a separate data pipeline from CDC's blood-lead case-finding through state health departments. The two corroborate the same event through independent evidence streams; FDA explicitly states the counts should not be added.
