—
Nylon and PET pyramid bags are the source of the synthetic-polymer particles in the headline studies (Hernandez 2019; Banaei 2024). Highest synthetic-polymer release. No epidemiological study has linked this exposure to measurable human health outcomes.
—
Avoid the synthetic-polymer shedding almost entirely. (Some paper bags use a thin polypropylene heat-seal, a much smaller plastic source than a full mesh bag.) Switching bag type is the only uncontested behavioural lever, but no human outcome data convert it into a quantified risk reduction.
—
Particle ingestion scales with cups brewed and with brewing temperature, but no cumulative-dose study has measured a human disease endpoint from tea-bag particles.

Plastic Teabags Release Billions of Microparticles and Nanoparticles into Tea- Thống kê
Steeping a single plastic teabag at brewing temperature (95 °C) releases ~11.6 billion microplastics and ~3.1 billion nanoplastics into one cup; particles matched to nylon and polyethylene terephthalate; levels several orders of magnitude higher than plastic loads previously reported in other foods- Trích đoạn
“"We show that steeping a single plastic teabag at brewing temperature (95 °C) releases approximately 11.6 billion microplastics and 3.1 billion nanoplastics into a single cup of the beverage. The composition of the released particles is matched to the original teabags (nylon and polyethylene terephthalate) [...] The levels of nylon and polyethylene terephthalate particles released from the teabag packaging are several orders of magnitude higher than plastic loads previously reported in other foods. An initial acute invertebrate toxicity assessment shows that exposure to only the particles released from the teabags caused dose-dependent behavioral and developmental effects." ”

- Hernandez et al. (2019, Env. Sci. Technol. 53(21):12300-12310, DOI 10.1021/acs.est.9b02540) cut and steeped commercial plastic teabags at 95 °C and counted released particles by electron microscopy, confirming polymer identity by FTIR and XPS. The headline 11.6 billion microplastic + 3.1 billion nanoplastic figure is PER CUP. The only toxicity test in the paper was on the water flea Daphnia magna — an invertebrate model showing dose-dependent behavioural and developmental effects, not a human-health outcome. The paper quantifies an exposure; it does not demonstrate harm to people.

Polymer-based teabags release micro/nanoplastics on infusion: polypropylene ~1.2 billion particles/mL (avg 136.7 nm), cellulose ~135 million/mL (244 nm), nylon-6 ~8.18 million/mL; particles taken up by human intestinal cells in vitro, highest in mucus-producing cells, reaching the cell nucleus- Trích đoạn
“[Paraphrase from the UAB/PlasticHeal press summary — full text paywalled; article verified to exist at DOI 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.143736]: commercial teabags made of nylon-6, polypropylene, and cellulose release billions of micro- and nanoplastics during infusion; the particles are absorbed by human intestinal cells in culture, with the highest uptake in mucus-producing cells and particles reaching the cell nucleus — the first demonstration of this uptake route for teabag-derived particles. The verbatim per-millilitre release figures are quoted from the companion UAB press release (see the following source). ”

- Banaei et al. (2024, Chemosphere 368:143736) characterised micro/nanoplastics from three teabag polymers and ran in-vitro uptake experiments on human intestinal cell lines. Release is reported PER MILLILITRE, not per cup, and by polymer — so these figures are NOT directly comparable to Hernandez's per-cup totals and must not be stacked into a single larger number. The novel finding is cellular: uptake of the particles by human gut cells, including nuclear localisation. This is a mechanistic in-vitro result that establishes a plausible pathway; it is not measured disease in a human population. Full text is paywalled, so the precise numbers are cited from the institution's own press release (next source) where they appear verbatim.

- WHO's 2019 review synthesised global evidence on microplastic ingestion and human health. Its key technical conclusion applies directly to tea-bag exposure: particles larger than ~150 µm are unlikely to be absorbed across the intestinal wall, and gut uptake of smaller particles is expected to be limited. Tea-bag nanoplastics (Hernandez and Banaei both report sub-micron particles) fall well below that threshold, into the size range where uptake is plausible but unquantified at the population level. WHO did not identify a quantifiable population-level risk from any current microplastic ingestion source, supporting the no_reliable_estimate classification.

- EFSA's October 2025 literature review covered over 100 studies on micro- and nanoplastic release from food contact materials, with mechanical stress (abrasion, friction, brewing heat) identified as a dominant release pathway. EFSA judged that current quantification studies likely overstate exposure because measurement methodology tends to over-count, and that nanoplastic data are too sparse for reliable risk assessment. The formal scientific opinion on microplastics in food is scheduled for end of 2027 — until then no European regulatory threshold exists for tea-bag-derived microplastic exposure. The absence of a quantified opinion after years of review is itself the evidence: this is a pre-epidemiological field.
