Knife share: 129 knife cases out of 458 (28.2%), or out of the 418 with a recorded mechanism (30.9%); ~30% is used. 33.2 x 0.30 = ~10.0 knife-caused tendon injuries per 100,000 per year. The age-adjusted sex split (56.3 male vs 10.7 female per 100,000) is for all mechanisms, not knives specifically, and is used only for the personal multipliers. The Olmsted rate includes all ages, and the highest incidence was at 20-29 years. Of the 27 violence-related cases, 10 involved a knife, so a few of the 129 knife cases are assaults rather than accidental cuts; the kitchen share in step (3) absorbs this only approximately.

Incidence, demographics and rehabilitation after digital nerve injury: A population-based study of 1004 adult patients in Sweden- 統計値
Surgically repaired digital-nerve injury: 8.3 per 100,000 person-years (Stockholm adults, 2012-2018; the paper says isolated but computes incidence over all injured patients); knife caused 47%; a knife slipping while splitting an avocado caused 6% (n = 61); 40% had a concomitant flexor tendon injury- 抜粋

- Excerpt sentences were checked on 2026-09-26 against the Europe PMC full text of the open-access article. The methods state that "Incidence was calculated as the number of injured patients divided by the population at risk", and 1,004 patients over 7 years in a Stockholm adult population of roughly 1.8 million gives about 8 per 100,000, so the 8.3 covers the whole cohort, including the 398 patients (40%) with a concomitant flexor tendon injury, despite the word "isolated"; to avoid counting the same injury twice, only the 60% without a flexor tendon injury is added: 8.3 x 0.60 x 0.47 = ~2.3 knife-caused nerve-only repairs per 100,000 adult person-years. If the 8.3 is in fact restricted to isolated nerve injuries, as the wording says, the flexor-tendon cases are already excluded and the 0.60 discount subtracts them a second time; the knife-caused nerve rate would then be 8.3 x 0.47 = ~3.9 per 100,000 and the any-knife total ~13.9 rather than ~12.3. The headline keeps the discounted figure; normalized.uncertainty.high is set to cover the undiscounted any-knife case (~0.8% lifetime) with padding. Swedish rates are applied to the US without adjustment; this is a transfer assumption, not a measured US rate.

- Abstract checked on 2026-09-26 via Europe PMC. The knife-type split is computed over the 2,481,994 injuries (about 30% of the total) where the knife type was recorded, so the 36% kitchen share assumes unrecorded cases split the same way. Context anchor: 434,259 / ~277 million (mean US population 1990-2008) = ~1.57 per 1,000 per year for any knife. Kitchen knives: 1.57 x 0.36 = ~0.56 per 1,000; lifetime 1 - (1 - 0.00056)^59 = ~3.3%, about 1 in 30 (an all-ages ER rate applied to adult years, so approximate). The 36% is also the kitchen share applied to the deep-injury rate in the headline.

- Abstract checked on 2026-09-26 via Europe PMC. Not used in the headline arithmetic. Confirms with more recent NEISS data (2015-2019) that knives remain by far the leading product behind hand and finger lacerations, a factor of about seven above the next product. The odds ratio of 0.76 compares the share of lacerations caused by knives among male patients with that share among female patients; it is not an incidence ratio. Men are 63.4% of the patients, so back-solving from the 30.5% overall knife share gives roughly 28% of men's and 34% of women's lacerations caused by knives, and men still account for about 1.4 times as many knife-laceration visits as women. This is used only to temper the all-mechanism sex multipliers, not in the headline.
