- Mapping Police Violence compiles data from news reports, public records, and social media to track all police killings (not just shootings). Using the finalized 2024 figure of 1,365 and 2025 figure of 1,314, the midpoint is ~1,340. With US population of ~335 million: 1,340/335,000,000 ≈ 4.0 per million per year ≈ 0.00000400. Lifetime over 59 adult years: 1 − (1 − 0.00000400)^59 ≈ 0.000236, inside the stated uncertainty band. We retain the more conservative ~1,200/year midpoint for the headline figure (1,200/335,000,000 ≈ 3.58 per million, lifetime ≈ 0.000211), which remains valid as the 2025 decline pulls the recent two-year average back toward the 2015–2024 norm.

Mapping Police Violence: For the First Time in Six Years, Police Violence Declined in 2025- 統計値
1,314 people killed by police in 2025, a 5% decrease from 2024 — the first decline since 2019; Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders 5.5× more likely to be killed than White people- 抜粋
“"In 2025, police killed 1,314 people in the United States—a 5% decrease from 2024. 2025 saw the first year-over-year decline in police killings since 2019. Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islanders (NHPI) faced the highest racial disparity, being 5.5x more likely to be killed by police than White people. American Indian & Alaska Native (AIAN) individuals were 3.0x more likely to be killed. Black people were 2.6x more likely than White people to be killed by police." ”

- Campaign Zero's finalized 2025 year-end report confirms 1,314 police killings in 2025 versus 1,365 in 2024 (a 5% decline, the first since 2019). MPV counts all deaths at the hands of police, not only shootings. The Washington Post's Fatal Force database — which tracked fatal police shootings only — stopped adding new incidents on 1 January 2025, covering 2015–2024 with over 1,000 fatal shootings per year; entries are still revised but no new years are added. This divergence (all-killings vs shootings-only, and one database ceasing live updates) is the reason this entry leans on MPV for the current annual count. The 2025 two-year midpoint of ~1,340 (4.0 per million) yields a 59-year lifetime risk of ≈ 0.000236, consistent with the headline 0.000211 figure.

- Edwards, Lee & Esposito (2019) used police-involved death data from 2013–2018 and age-specific mortality modeling to estimate lifetime risks by race, ethnicity, and sex. Their Black male lifetime risk of 1 in 1,000 (0.001) is roughly 2.5× the overall male risk of 1 in 2,000 (0.0005). The sex-averaged population rate implied by their figures (~0.000182) is somewhat lower than our simple annualized estimate of 0.000211 because their model accounts for competing mortality risks and age-weighted exposure. Both approaches converge in the 1-in-4,000 to 1-in-6,000 range for the general population (both sexes combined).

Fatal police violence by race and state in the USA, 1980–2019: a network meta-regression- 統計値
Estimated 30,800 deaths from police violence 1980–2018; rate of 0.69 per 100,000 for non-Hispanic Black people, 3.5× the 0.20 per 100,000 rate for non-Hispanic white people- 抜粋
“"Across all races and states in the USA, we estimate 30 800 deaths (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 30 300–31 300) from police violence between 1980 and 2018. The age-standardised mortality rate due to police violence in non-Hispanic Black people from 1980 to 2019 was estimated to be 0·69 (95% UI 0·67–0·71) per 100 000, which was 3·5 times higher than the rate for non-Hispanic White people, at 0·20 (0·20–0·20) per 100 000. Between 1980 and 2018, the NVSS did not report 55·5% (54·8–56·2) of all deaths attributable to police violence." ”

- The GBD-affiliated Lancet study found systematic undercount in official death certificates — 55.5% of police-violence deaths were unreported in the NVSS. The age-standardised rate of 0.69 per 100,000 for non-Hispanic Black people (6.9 per million) annualizes to a 59-year lifetime risk of 1 − (1 − 0.0000069)^59 ≈ 0.000407 for Black Americans, broadly consistent with the Edwards PNAS Black-male estimate (~0.001) once sex composition is accounted for; the 0.35 per 100,000 figure in this study is the Hispanic-of-any-race rate, not the Black rate. The finding that vital statistics miss over half of cases underscores why independent databases (Mapping Police Violence, Fatal Force) are essential.
