Road traffic injury is the leading cause of death for people aged 5 to 29 worldwide, according to the WHO Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023 — a fact that is widely cited in public health but rarely lands in everyday risk perception for parents or teenagers. The GBD 2021 analysis puts the overall global road-traffic death rate at about 15 per 100,000 population per year; no cited source isolates a 15–19-specific global rate, but the age group’s mortality sits near that overall level, and the average conceals an enormous span — under 5 per 100,000 in Finland, over 100 per 100,000 in parts of sub-Saharan Africa. In the United States, the rate has fallen dramatically since the 1990s — from roughly 30 per 100,000 to around 7 per 100,000 — as seatbelt compliance, airbag adoption, and Graduated Driver Licensing programs have compounded. The 5-year cumulative probability for a US teen is approximately 1 in 3,000; at the overall global rate it is closer to 1 in 1,300.
The US teen driving context is well-studied. IIHS data show that the fatal crash rate per mile driven for 16- to 19-year-olds is roughly three times that of experienced adult drivers. The elevation is not evenly distributed: night driving between 9pm and midnight is disproportionately dangerous, as is carrying multiple teenage passengers (each additional teen passenger increases crash risk). GDL programs that restrict night driving and passenger loads for new drivers have been a major contributor to the improvement seen since the late 1990s. Teen passenger fatalities — teens killed while someone else was driving — follow the same pattern.
The global picture looks different. In low- and middle-income countries, the majority of teenage road deaths are not driver fatalities but pedestrian and motorcycle passenger deaths — reflecting road environments without sidewalks, vehicles without helmets, and enforcement gaps. WHO estimates that 90% of road traffic fatalities occur in countries with low or middle income while those countries hold only 60% of the world’s vehicles. The technological solutions that cut US teen road deaths — airbags, ABS, and eventually autonomous emergency braking — diffuse into LMIC fleets decades later, widening the gap.

Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023- 統計値
Road traffic injury is the #1 cause of death for ages 5–29 globally; ~1.19M deaths/year all ages, ~30% under 25- 抜粋
“"Road traffic crashes remain the leading cause of death for children and young people aged 5–29 years. Approximately 1.19 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes, representing the eighth leading cause of death globally. Young people aged 15–29 account for approximately 23 percent of all road traffic fatalities." ”

- WHO Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023 states ~1.19M road-traffic deaths/year (all ages) and that road injury is the leading cause of death for ages 5–29. It does NOT report a 15–19-specific per-100,000 rate, and neither does the cited GBD 2021 paper (PMC11997400) — that paper gives only the overall global rate (~15/100,000, all ages). The entry's native therefore uses that overall source-stated global rate as the closest available proxy for adolescents; no 15–19-specific global rate is asserted.

Road injuries caused ~1.19M deaths globally in 2021 (mortality rate ~15/100,000); the 20–24 age group had the highest road-injury incidence; road injuries are the leading cause of death for ages 5–29- 抜粋

"The Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023 revealed that road injuries were the leading cause of death among children and youth aged 5–29 years in 2019." "The age group of 20–24 years exhibited the highest incidence of road injuries, with a rate of 935.8 per 100,000 population." ”

- Gu D, Ou S, Liu G. GBD 2021 systematic analysis of road injuries, Preventive Medicine Reports 2025;53 (PMID 40235577, PMC11997400). Corroborates the global totals used in this entry: ~1.19M road traffic deaths in 2021 at ~15/100,000 overall, with the peak road-injury burden in young adults (highest incidence at 20–24) and road injuries the leading cause of death for ages 5–29. This source does NOT report a 15–19-specific fatality rate; the closest source-stated figure is the overall global rate (~15/100,000, all ages), which the entry's native uses as a proxy for the adolescent rate. Normalized to the US-specific rate (~7/100k, IIHS data) = ~0.00033 over 5 years for comparability.

- IIHS Fatality Facts: Teenagers. 2,896 US teens aged 13–19 died in motor vehicle crashes in 2022; with ~29 million US residents aged 13–19 this is ~10/100,000/year across the wider 13–19 band, of which the 16–19 driving-age sub-band drives most deaths (~7/100,000/year, the US anchor used here). Used to set the US comparator axis (~7/100k) that the normalized figure is built on, distinct from the overall global native rate (~15/100k). The 5-year cumulative US probability: 1 - (1 - 0.00007)^5 ≈ 0.00035, rounded to 0.00033.

- GHSA "Teens and Speeding: Breaking the Deadly Cycle" (FARS 2015–2019). Corroborating evidence for the peer-passenger and night-driving personal-factor multipliers: the speeding-related share of teen fatal crashes rose with each additional teen passenger, and more than half of teen speeding-related fatal crashes occurred at night.
