Wahrgenommen

Kinder) / (35 % * 72,3 Mio. exponierte Kinder) = 597k / 25,3 Mio. ~ 2,36 %.

About 35% of US households cook with a gas or propane stove, and combustion at the burner releases nitrogen dioxide that migrates through the home within an hour and lingers for hours after the flame is out. A 2024 Stanford study (Kashtan et al., Science Advances) modeled national exposure and estimated that typical gas-stove use raises long-term indoor NO2 by about 4 parts per billion, roughly three-quarters of the way to the level the World Health Organization flags as unsafe in outdoor air. From that, the authors attributed up to roughly 200,000 current cases of pediatric asthma to gas and propane stoves once other combustion pollutants are included, and about 50,000 from NO2 alone. A separate 2022 analysis (Gruenwald et al.) took the population-attributable-fraction route and put 12.7% of all current US childhood asthma on gas stoves, using a pooled odds ratio of 1.34 from earlier epidemiology.
Translating a population fraction into a per-child probability requires arithmetic the headlines skip. Among the roughly 25 million US children in gas-stove households, the attributable-fraction-among-exposed implied by an odds ratio of 1.34 is about 25%, and applied to the elevated asthma prevalence in that group it yields close to 2% of those children carrying asthma attributable to the stove. The cruder route, Gruenwald’s 12.7% PAF spread over the same exposed children against a 6.5% childhood asthma rate, lands at about 2.4%. Two methods, one neighborhood: roughly 1 in 50. The honest floor is lower, near 1 in 500, if only the NO2-specific Kashtan estimate is used, which is why the uncertainty band runs from 0.2% to 3%.
The number rests on a contested premise. Every estimate here is associational: it assumes the gas-stove/asthma correlation is causal, and a 2024 critique in Global Epidemiology argues that neither the Stanford paper nor its references establish causation, noting that population attributable fractions “are associational rather than causal.” Gas stoves also travel with older housing, urban density, and lower income, all independent asthma risk factors that the underlying observational data control imperfectly. The Kashtan 200,000-case estimate carries a confidence interval that crosses zero. None of the figures account for ventilation or range-hood use, which change actual exposure substantially. The 2% sits in the same range as a US adult’s lifetime odds of dying in a car crash (0.95%) or having a vehicle stolen (3%), though those are lifetime and often fatal outcomes while this is childhood-prevalence chronic illness, so the comparison is across different clocks and stakes.
